Universities now regard student mobility programmes as a context for their students to acquire intercultural skills, cosmopolitan outlooks and potential labour market advantage. If executed thoughtfully, immersing students in unfamiliar cultural environments and different academic systems can make them aware of their own taken-for-granted practices and assumptions by bringing them into contact with people and issues that broaden their perspectives. Little is known, however, about the preparation and support that students receive to maximise their learning from mobility programmes. Using Bourdieu's writings on forms of capital, field and institutional position-taking, the authors analyse a recent initiative to increase undergraduate outbound student mobility at a researchintensive Australian university against the experiences and perceptions of participating students. They conclude with a discussion of possible improvements to mobility programmes, including greater emphases on broadening student participation and more engagement with academic learning.

Higher education research is, by its nature, rather an introspective field of study. It is also highly dispersed within and beyond the academy: inherently, therefore, it is a multidisciplinary field of study. An analysis of 567 articles published in 15 leading higher education journals in 2010 demonstrates both the breadth of interest in higher education research across the academy, and variations between disciplines in the themes researched, the methods and methodologies employed and the theoretical perspectives applied. Examples of theoretical perspectives drawn from different disciplines and/or developed within higher education research, and applied to researching particular topics, are identified and discussed. It is concluded that the field is both healthy and growing, though, in most countries, it lacks a strong or disciplinary identity.

Σκοπός της παρούσας εργασίας είναι να διερευνηθούν οι προσδοκίες των εκπαιδευόμενων στο Σχολείο Δεύτερης Ευκαιρίας (Σ.Δ.Ε.), υπό την οπτική της ανταπόκρισης στους διακηρυγμένους στόχους του εκπαιδευτικού θεσμού, σε σχέση με τα κοινωνικο-οικονομικά οφέλη κατά την περίοδο της οικονομικής κρίσης στην Ελλάδα, μετά την απόκτηση του «τίτλου» σπουδών τους. Η εργασία αξιοποιεί τις έννοιες του πεδίου, του θεσμοποιημένου κεφαλαίου και του συμβολικού κεφαλαίου από το θεωρητικό σχήμα του Pierre Bourdieu. Η συλλογή των δεδομένων έγινε με τη χρήση 14 ημι-δομημένων συνεντεύξεων και η επεξεργασία τους με ποιοτική ανάλυση περιεχομένου. Τα ερευνητικά μας ευρήματα κατέδειξαν ότι οι εκπαιδευόμενοι από τη μια πλευρά κατανοούν την αναγκαιότητα της πρόσκτησης του θεσμοποιημένου κεφαλαίου το οποίο θα τους εξασφαλίσει το δικαίωμα εισόδου στο πεδίο εργασίας και τη βελτίωση της οικονομικής τους κατάστασης, από την άλλη πλευρά ωστόσο, φάνηκε ότι αντιμετωπίζουν τον τίτλο σπουδών ως ένα ανίσχυρο διακύβευμα για την πραγματοποίηση των προσδοκιών τους. Έτσι, επενδύουν στη μετατρεψιμότητα του θεσμοποιημένου κεφαλαίου τους σε συμβολικό κεφάλαιο, ευελπιστώντας ότι μπορεί εν δυνάμει, να τους αποφέρει κέρδη.
