Exploring the trade-offs between electric heating policy and carbon mitigation in China

Abstract: China has enacted a series of policies since 2015 to substitute electricity for in-home combustion for rural residential heating. The Electric Heating Policy (EHP) has contributed to significant improvements in air quality, benefiting hundreds of millions of people. This shift, however, has resulted in a sharp increase in electric loads and associated carbon emissions. Here, we show that China’s EHP will greatly increase carbon emissions. We develop a theoretical model to quantify the carbon emissions from pow… Show more

“…(2) The direct GHG emission factors are calculated by EF j = ∑ i DEF ij •HHV j •GWP i [30]; i represents the type of greenhouse gas, e.g., CO 2 , CH 4 , or N 2 O; j represents the type of fossil fuel, e.g., gasoline or diesel; DEF ij is the default emission factor of greenhouse gas i from fossil fuel j combustion [25]; HHV j is the higher heating value of fossil fuel j [26]; GWP i is the global warming potential of greenhouse gas i [27]. (3) The indirect GHG emission factors are derived from [28,29]. (4) The statistical recovery ratio of light fossil fuel in China's oil field and refinery is 74% [31].…”

“…China has been the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter for more than 15 years [1]. To mitigate global climate change, China has implemented numerous policies to conserve energy and reduce GHG emissions in different industrial sectors [2][3][4]. "Green Mine" is a mandatory policy recently released by China's Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), which aims to mitigate the environmental impact of the mining sector.…”

“…The heat generated by the gas engine during the power generation is utilized by absorption water heating and chilling unit to produce cooling or thermal energy. The energy conversion efficiency models and parameters of the typical equipment in this paper can be found in (Liu et al, 2016;Abeysekera et al, 2016;Huang et al, 2018;Li et al, 2018;Wang et al, 2020;Xi et al, 2021). Particularly, the equivalent models mentioned above are not the actual physical equipment but the equivalence and abstraction of each piece of equipment in the IES according to the energy conversion relationship.…”

“…As the world energy crisis is becoming increasingly severe, the environmental pollution caused by the consumption of fossil fuels has become a serious challenge. So it has become an aim of the whole mankind to develop clean and renewable energy 1,2 . During the development of all kinds of renewable and promising resources, the conversion and utilization of solar energy have been widely concerned and promoted in many countries due to its advantages of less environmental restrictions and low maintenance cost of equipment 3 .…”
