Exploring the Researcher‐Participant Relationship in a Multiethnic, Multicultural and Multilingual Context Through Reflexivity

Abstract: In this paper I explore the notion of reflexivity in two main domains. In the first, I explore my struggles as a trained objective, positivist researcher trying to embrace and appreciate subjective qualitative research practices. In the second section, I explore the dynamic relationship between myself, the researcher and my participants, focusing on issues related to ethnicity and power. Generally, research that explores ethnicity and power relationships commonly depicts the researcher as the privileged self c… Show more

“…As such, assumptions were carefully acknowledged in the research process. Pre-conceptions prior to data collection and throughout the analytical process were documented by the first author in a reflexive diary [36,37]. This process of documentation surprised the researcher in that the data collection and analysis were quite emotional and reflective experiences.…”

“…As a postgraduate student, reflective processes throughout the study were vital for connecting theory with practice, improving the methodology, building a deep understanding of the phenomena, recognising personal assumptions and biases, and for fostering a novice qualitative researcher (Renganathan, 2009). In an effort to further comprehend the development of focus groups and resulting text, I kept a research journal in which memos, notes, reflections, ideas, and questions were recorded in each part of the study (Watt, 2007).…”

“…As recent scholarship has pointed out, there is much to be learned in questioning the boundaries between the insider and outsider, and in interrogating the dualistic notions upon which such divisions are premised (Renganathan, 2009;Webster & John, 2010). Therefore a second methodological question emerging from the literacy wall project pertains to that of re-envisaging research as encounters in which all parties are co-implicated in knowledge production.…”
