Exploring the Redundancy Capacity Through a System Dynamics Approach

Abstract: Current urban agenda is interested in developing urban strategies to enhance urban resilience for cities. This paper examines the concept of urban resilience applied in the context of urban planning with specific attention to which are the capacities that make urban systems resilient. The knowledge and the understanding of these capacities are fundamental to set up suitable strategies. However, only few frameworks consider urban resilience and its capacity within the complexity of urban system. Through an in-d… Show more

“…It is what gives the system the buffer capacity to use alternative resources or paths when the principal ones are lost [68]. Redundancy includes different ways to achieve needs and can be explained with the repetition of the same elements, in order to guarantee the functionality of the systems in case of emergency events [69]. Redundancy in the bazaar area takes many forms, including the multi-functionality of space that can be adapted to change or disturbances, as well as variability because redundant spaces can absorb a variety of urban functions if necessary [70].…”

“…But from the literature, they are important to consider as their cumulative role in ensuring resilience cannot be overlooked. For instance, redundancy is essential as elements such as infrastructures, governance structures, and policies would regularly require to be substituted to align with the tenets of smartness (Bottero et al, 2020). In the case of interdependency, which also received less attention, most urban elements and components, especially within the smart city framework, are very closely interlinked.…”
