The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different types of maltreatment on adolescents' emotional/behavioural problems in Zhejiang Province, eastern China. Adolescents aged ten to 16 years in two urban and two rural schools were invited to complete a questionnaire survey, including experiences of maltreatment and emotional/behavioural problems. In total, 791 questionnaires were eligible for analysis. Preceding-year prevalence was 5.6 per cent for minor physical maltreatment, 27.6 per cent for moderate physical maltreatment and 4.6 per cent for severe physical maltreatment, 47.5 per cent for emotional maltreatment and 8.2 per cent for non-contact punishment. Witnessing domestic violence was reported by 49.4 per cent of the adolescents. Emotional maltreatment was consistently associated with a higher risk of emotional/behavioural problems (relative risk ratio (RRR) ranging from 1.85-2.36) after adjusting for other maltreatment exposures and socioeconomic factors. Severe physical maltreatment showed the strongest association with behavioural problems (RRR = 4.75 (95% confidence interval 1.74, 12.98), P = 0.002). Witnessing domestic violence alone was not associated with emotional/behavioural problems in adolescents. The effect size of emotional maltreatment was greater for girls, while physical maltreatment had greater effects among boys. There was a cumulative negative effect with an increasing number of maltreatment types. The results indicate an important need: to educate parents, to identify high-risk children and to introduce a formal child protection system in China.

The study aimed to investigate young Chinese people’s childhood and adolescence exposure to maltreatment from all types of perpetrators, and to explore their perceptions of such experiences. A cross-sectional study was carried out among 1,255 young people at three universities located in Zhejiang Province, Eastern China. A questionnaire drawing on validated tools was developed to measure childhood and adolescence exposure to physical and emotional maltreatment. Physical and emotional maltreatment by any perpetrator before the age of 18 years was reported by 83.3% and 85.9% of the students, respectively; extreme forms were not rare. Overall, 68.8% of the students reported physical maltreatment by parents, 56.1% by teachers, 29.8% by peers, 11.7% by siblings, and 9.1% by grandparents; 58.5% reported emotional maltreatment by parents, 43.3% by teachers, 53.3% by peers, 12.0% by siblings, and 10.0% by grandparents. Physical or emotional maltreatment by any perpetrator was common in all sociodemographic groups, irrespective of urban/rural residence and economic status. Risk factors for maltreatment differ with type of maltreatment and perpetrator. Personal experience of emotional maltreatment was generally perceived as more harmful and less acceptable than physical, especially in females. In conclusion, high levels of maltreatment of children and adolescents in China indicate the need for (a) parent education about appropriate discipline measures when raising children, (b) teacher education and enforcement of existing laws banning institutional corporal punishment, (c) the adoption of a comprehensive anti-bullying strategy, and (d) the development of a formal child protection system to protect and support the most vulnerable families.

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menghasilkan suatu media edukasi perlindungan anak untuk mengurangi perilaku kekerasan pada anak. Perlindungan anak merupakan permasalahan yang harus mendapatkan perhatian dari setiap pihak. Untuk meningkatkan perlindungan terhadap anak diperlukan suatu media edukasi yang dapat digunakan dengan mudah oleh setiap pihak, baik oleh orang tua, guru, maupun anak tersebut. Media edukasi yang dihasilkan dalam penelitian ini adalah dalam bentuk buku cerita bergambar. Berdasarkan hasil uji validasi oleh tiga orang ahli diperoleh hasil sebesar 95% dalam kategori sangat baik. Hasil uji lapangan pada 15 orang tua, 14 orang guru, dan 11 orang anak juga diketahui bahwa media edukasi buku bergambar sangat baik dan dapat dipahami dari segi cover, isi, dan tampilan buku cerita. berdasarkan hasil analisis data maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa buku cerita seri perlindungan anak sangat baik, sehingga dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan orang tua, guru, dan anak tentang perlindungan anak sehingga dapat mengurangi perilaku kekerasan pada anak.
