Exploring the importance for promoting Earth observation in education

Abstract: This paper presents the significance and importance of promoting the benefits of Earth Observation when implemented in 'secondary' and 'higher education' in Cyprus schools. Firstly, examples of how Earth Observation is exploited for secondary education in other countries, such as Germany and China, are presented, and in particular how ESA's Earth Observation education materials are used to promote STEM education. Secondly, the 'EXCELSIOR for Schools' & 'SOFIA ESA' initiatives for promoting Earth Observation ed… Show more

“…Remote sensing is interdisciplinary in character and thus enables students to apply knowledge from several fields in any work with images (Voss et al 2007;Somantri 2016;Hadjimitsis, Kyriakidis, Akylas 2020). The multidisciplinarity of remote sensing studies integrates the subjects of geography, biology, physics, mathematics and computer science.…”

“…As such, EO can be considered an innovative teaching and learning approach for CCE, bringing many benefits towards facilitating climate literacy. Additional EO benefits for CCE, according to a number of studies [20][21][22][23][24][25], include: (a) student motivation due to the attractiveness and fascination that space offers (e.g., students are drawn to satellite observations; thus, students are more engaged in the classroom). (b) The enhanced visualization of environmental problems, offering a high degree of vividness; the connection of school-derived theoretical knowledge with real world, upto-date environmental issues.…”
