Exploring the Evolution and Determinants of Open Innovation: A Perspective from Patent Citations

Abstract: The research of open innovation (OI) has developed considerably in recent years. In this article, a new perspective based on the patent citation network is provided to explore the dynamic evolution and mode of OI. In our framework of the OI network, enterprises are represented as nodes, and patent citations represent cross-organizational knowledge flow, which are ties in the network. The Driver Assistance System (DAS) was selected as the research case. Time-sliced patent citation networks are constructed, and … Show more

“…Although Ji et al (2022) mentioned that economic globalisation and rapidly increasing technological complexity make innovation more critical than ever, Eppinger et al (2021) consider potential benefits gaps and harmful effects of innovation; their study proposes six different attributes of innovation provide benefits to society: (I) appropriate information and communication channels, (II) affordable price, (III) appropriateness and availability, (IV) predictability in terms of relevant and reflective risk assessment, (V) accountability concerning the proper allocation of the costs of harmful side effects and (VI) creating a sustainable path for the transition to societal and environmental sustainability.…”

“…Smart manufacturing technology operators are required to have perceptiveness and accuracy in action, analytical skills, the ability to assess the situation in relation to the problem, divisibility and concentration of attention, responsibility, good eye-hand coordination, having and developing technical interests, and above all, readiness to work in a smart work environment and smart space [106][107][108][109]. Operators have to move in the area of many knowledge fields-knowledge-related fields-such as computer science, automation, electrical engineering, electronics, mechanics, robotics, optics and photonics, sensorics and engineering, e.g., quality engineering, information technology engineering, precision engineering, and automation and robotics, as well as management and decision-making techniques [16,110]. This means that operators must continuously improve their skills [110,111].…”

“…The implementation of Industry 4.0 in a company is aimed, among other things, at improving its innovativeness. An operator should be characterised by the appropriate knowledge and competencies, thus allowing for more innovation and creativity [13][14][15][16]. This is necessary for steel companies to develop and establish a competitive rivalry in the global market.…”
