Exploring the Emotions of Distance Learning Students in an Assessed, Online, Collaborative Project

Abstract: Previous research has highlighted the importance of emotions of learners in online learning settings. However, much of this research has tended to focus on individual learning situations rather than social learning activities. The exploration of the emotional experiences of distance learners has also received little attention when compared to other student groups (e.g. full-time or blended learning students). As many distance learners are in full- or part-time employment or have other commitments, the emotions… Show more

“…Lei and Medwell (2021) explained that it is significant to note that some participant feedback emphasized the difficulties they encountered at the start of their collaborative learning, particularly their lack of familiarity with some group members and the worry that Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) would have a detrimental effect on their learning. In addition, students collaborating online are reported to have higher levels of undesirable emotions like fear and irritation (Donelan & Kear, 2018;Hilliard, 2017;Hilliard, 2019). Moreover, all ten participants in the qualitative study of Medaille and Usinger (2020) have shared discomfort towards collaboration with other people and described the process as "beyond discomfort."…”

“…The specific research on law students overwhelmingly assumes the presence of such a traditional university setting, despite a range of online providers, such as The Open University offering distance learning law degrees for over 20 years. There is a body of literature on the wellbeing of distance-learners more generally (see, for example, Barr, 2014;Hilliard et al, 2019;Waterhouse et al, 2020). This highlights the potential vulnerabilities of such learners whose demographics indicate they are likely to be juggling multiple responsibilities in challenging socio-economic circumstances (Waterhouse et al, 2020), for example, a first-generation student studying their degree alongside parenting and other caring responsibilities whilst also being required to continue with their paid worker role.…”

“…The emotional experience of distance learning students has also received little focussed attention when compared to other student groups. Given the particularities of the cohort we work with, one can assume that their internal emotional lives will be equally as distinct (Hilliard et al 2019). This is our current focus.…”
