Exploring the Effective Use of the Vocabulary/Block Design Short form with a Special School Population

Abstract: The effectiveness of the Vocabulary/Block Design subtest combination (V/BD) as an estimate of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) full scale IQ with special education students in public school settings was explored. Students with academic and/or behavior problems were administered the standard WISC-III. Satisfactory correlations (.55-.90) were found between the resulting short form IQs and the full scale IQs. However, approximately one out of two of the students showed changes in intelligen… Show more

“…The V‐BD short form is often used to estimate full scale IQ (FSIQ) according to the algorithm [2.9*(sum of normed scores) + 42] (Campbell ). The V‐BD short form correlates highly with full scale IQ ( r = .88) (Herreragraf et al ) and the V‐BD short form has been found valid for the estimation of intelligence, with a good reliability ( r = .91) and validity (.82) (Campbell ).…”

“…The V-BD short form is often used to estimate full scale IQ (FSIQ) according to the algorithm (2.9 × (sum of normed scores) + 42) [ 16 ]. The V-BD short form correlates highly with WISC full scale IQ ( r = .88) [ 29 ] and has been found valid for the estimation of intelligence, with good reliability ( r = .91) and validity (.82) [ 16 ]. There was a significant effect of group on IQ [ F (2,44) = 11.73; p < .001], with the 47, XXY ( n = 15) group having a significantly lower IQ than both controls ( n = 16) and the ASD group ( n = 16) ( p < .001 in both instances).…”

“…This short form can be used to estimate full scale IQ (FSIQ) according to the algorithm (2.9*(sum of normed scores)+42) [45]. The V-BD short form correlates high with full scale IQ ( r  = .88) [46] and the V-BD short form has been found valid for the estimation of intelligence, with a good reliability ( r  = .91) and validity (.82) [45].…”
