Exploring the Criterion Validity of Pragmatic Person-Centered Care/Culture Change Measures

Abstract: Background Nursing homes (NHs) are required to provide person-centered care, efforts often folded into broader culture change initiatives. Despite the known benefits of culture change, it is difficult to measure. This study aims to assess the criterion validity of the Preferences for Everyday Living Inventory (PELI) Implementation Indicator with other culture change measures. Methods Using data from Ohio-based NHs ( n = 771), logistic regression techniques demonstrated the relationship between the PELI Impleme… Show more

“…The dependent variable is the extent to which each NH implemented the PELI. The Biennial Survey contains a series of questions that describe each NH’s knowledge about and the extent of implementing the PELI ( Kunkel et al, 2022 ). The dependent variable is operationalized as a dichotomous variable that indicates whether there was “complete” PELI implementation or “partial” implementation.…”

“…In the Biennial Survey, NHs report the extent of their PELI implementation with 10 levels of implementation effort, ranging from no PELI implementation activities to implementing PELI into quality improvement. These 10 response options were dichotomized to represent partial PELI implementation versus complete PELI implementation (Kunkel et al, 2022a). For a detailed look at the dichotomization of the PELI Implementation variable and the breakdown of the analytic sample in terms of PELI implementation, please see Table 1.…”

“…The PCC initiative examined in this study is the implementation of the Preferences for Everyday Living Inventory (PELI), which is a validated 72-item questionnaire designed to uncover and honor the importance of various preferences for NH residents (Van Haitsma et al, 2013). The degree to which providers integrate important preferences obtained from the PELI into resident care is a valid indicator of a NHs adoption of PCC (Kunkel et al, 2022a).…”
