Exploring the Complexity of First-Year Student Belonging in Higher Education: Familiarity, Interpersonal, and Academic Belonging

Abstract: Belonging is critical to first-year student success and persistence in higher education. However, differing definitions make it challenging to fully understand why belonging is significant. Foregrounding student voice, this research explored how first-year Australian university students talked about their belonging. Using Kahu and Nelson’s (2018) framework of student engagement as a lens, 18 students were interviewed weekly throughout the year. “…Pursuing collective objectives assists in meeting the needs for belonging, connectivity, and association (Kahu et al, 2022;Li & Loverude, 2013;Walton & Brady, 2017). When deciding to pursue or leave a particular context, individuals rely on their beliefs regarding whether a role enables them to pursue objectives (referred to as goal affordances) to determine which of their valued goals can be achieved (or potentially hindered) within that context (Diekman & Steinberg, 2013;Fuesting et al, 2019;Yang & Barth, 2015).…”

“…Van Heerden & Bharuthram relationships with their tutors (Kahu, Ashley and Picton, 2022). At first year level, tutors are especially important as students are still adjusting to the expectations and requirements of university and having someone they can go to, whom they feel comfortable talking to, can greatly assist with this (Chanock et al, 2012;Hirst et al, 2004;Tapp, 2015).…”
