Exploring the atmosphere using smartphones

Abstract: The characteristics of the inner layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere, are determinant for the earth's life. In this experience we explore the first hundreds of meters using a smartphone mounted on a quadcopter. Both the altitude and the pressure are obtained using the smartphone's sensors. We complement these measures with data collected from the flight information system of an aircraft. The experimental results are compared with the International Standard Atmosphere and other simple approximations: isoth… Show more

“…Almost all professional quality drones are equipped with ordinary digital camera(s), and some of them also offer fisheye lens attachments (e.g., the Parrot Bebop Drone [143]). Also, a light-weight smartphone with a fisheye lens attachment can be loaded on such drones as almost all of them offer at least some payload carrying capacity [144]. Some training of the pilot prior to undertaking the survey is recommended as a drone crash may lead to the loss of expensive sensory equipment [145].…”

“…In previous works, the simultaneous use of two sensors like the gyroscope and the accelerometer was proposed to relate angular velocity, energy, centripetal and tangential acceleration [10][11][12] . In another experiment, the pressure sensor and the GPS were used in synchrony to find the relationship between atmospheric pressure and altitude 13 .…”
