Exploring the association between oral tactile sensitivity measures and phenotypic markers of oral responsiveness

Abstract: This study investigated the individual variability in oral tactile sensitivity considering touch, by means of Von Frey Hair monofilaments (VFH) and spatial resolution, using the grating orientation test (GOT). The relationships of the two measures with 6‐n‐propylthiouracil (PROP) responsiveness and fungiform papillae density and size were investigated. One hundred and forty‐four subjects (48.6% women, aged 18–30) participated in the study. VFH and GOT thresholds were assessed by three‐down/one‐up staircase met… Show more

“…As a result, hyperresponsive individuals systematically showed enhanced acuity to tastes or sensations in both liquid and solid foods, and this leads us to think that taste profiles may also differ on acuity towards textural properties. However, as currently accepted positive relationships between oral responsiveness and tactile acuity (Breen et al, 2019;Essick et al, 2003;Linne & Simons, 2017) have recently been questioned (Mani et al, 2022), we encourage further investigations to conclusively (dis)confirm such link into real foods. Taken collectively, our findings fall into the existing literature supporting the existence of groups of individuals with generalized hypergeusia (Dinnella et al, 2018;Hayes & Keast, 2011;Nolden et al, 2020;Piochi et al, 2021;Puputti et al, 2018).…”

“…Third, the determination of tactile discrimination thresholds in several studies has been performed using grating widths in sequence (Craig & Lyle, 2001;Van Boven, Hamilton, Kauffman, Keenan, & Pascual-Leone, 2000;Van Boven & Johnson, 1994b); thus bias may have been present because participants may have predicted the following grating width during testing. The staircase method should thus be used to avoid predictive bias (Etter, Breen, Alcala, Ziegler, & Hayes, 2020;Etter, Miller, & Ballard, 2017;Libouton, Barbier, Plaghki, & Thonnard, 2010;Mani et al, 2022;Tracey, Greene, & Doty, 2012).…”
