Exploring Superior Distribution Practices in the Paper Industry

Abstract: Studies on effective distribution practices specific to the paper industry are largely non-existent. Therefore, through our exploratory research, we first identify key elements of physical distribution in existing literature. Secondly, we empirically investigate the extent to which these elements influence non-cost-based (such as inventory turnover, order fulfillment etc.) measures of distribution performance in the paper industry. Using a sample of 95 National Paper Trade Association member firms, we create t… Show more

“…Measurement and structural models were built in partial least squares (PLS), utilizing the SmartPLS software (Ringle, Sarstedt, and Straub 2012 ;Ringle, Wende, and Will 2005 ). Our application of PLS is consistent with prior practice in logistics and supply chain management research (e.g., Kale et al 2009 ; López-Navarro, Moliner-Tena, and Rodríguez-Artola 2011 ; Srivastava, Srinivasan, and Iyer 2015 ).…”

“…The variable information search had a relatively low composite reliability. While still at an acceptable level (Kale et al 2009), a look at the measurement items may explain this low value. For example, a respondent indicating the solicitation of others within the firm does not automatically have to solicit top management for information as well.…”

“…While most of the values were well above the suggested 0.70 level, the Cronbach alpha for the information search scale exhibited a reliability of 0.60, which is still at an acceptable level (cf. Kale et al 2009). Finally, construct validity was assured by obtaining acceptable levels for content validity, unidimensionality, reliability, convergent and discriminant validity (O'Leary-Kelly and Vokurka 1998).…”

“…As the upstream transport carrier performance influences the effectiveness of the entire supply chain, carrier selection decisions at the upstream play a vital role in terms of resiliency, efficiency, and sustainability of timber supply chains. While there is a wealth of literature on downstream supply chain logistics (Kale et al, 2009;Lin & Lee, 2009) and carrier selection (Bardi et al, 1989;Meixell & Norbis, 2008;Murphy et al, 1997;Premeaux, 2002;Williams et al, 2013), less is known further upstream, particularly at the raw materials (i.e., logging) stage. Timber management and logging companies (shippers) operate under immense pressures that affect their carrier selection decisions.…”
