Exploring spatiotemporal effects of the driving factors on COVID-19 incidences in the contiguous United States

Abstract: Since December 2019, the world has witnessed the stringent effect of an unprecedented global pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). As of January 29, 2021, there have been 100, 819, 363 confirmed cases and 2, 176, 159 deaths reported. Among the countries affected severely by COVID-19, the United States tops the list. Research has been conducted to discuss the causal associations between explanatory factors and COVID-19 transmis… Show more

“…Socioeconomic status, social environment, and government response are important factors for the emergence of infectious diseases ( Kim, 2021 ). Ethnicity, income, crime rate, and migration factors exhibit strong associations with COVID-19 cases and deaths ( Maiti et al, 2021 ). Sociodemographic and healthcare factors, including population density and proportion of the elderly population aged 65 and above, as well as hospital beds and diabetes rates, are significant determinants of COVID-19 incidence rates ( Mansour et al, 2021 ).…”

“…From the advent of COVID-19, most studies mainly put efforts on building the intelligent model for predicting the pandemic trend and investigating the contribution of different factors to the virus spread for a single country or a state ( Sannigrahi, Pilla et al 2020 , Maiti, Zhang et al 2021 , Mansour, Al Kindi et al 2021 ). However, a challenge arises that it is impossible to directly inform preparedness response strategies under the combination of ideal socio-environmental conditions from the prediction.…”

“…Various studies have assessed determinants of the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic [ 27 ] and examined the spatial patterns and underlying risk factors [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. In the United States of America, income inequality, the percentage of nurse practitioners, the percentage of the black female population [ 29 ], county-level socioeconomic factors [ 30 ] and other social determinants, such as age, disability, language, ethnicity, occupation and urban status [ 28 ] explain significant variations in COVID-19 incidence.…”
