Exploring representativeness and reliability for late medieval earthquakes in Europe

Abstract: Seismic catalogues of past earthquakes have compiled a substantial amount of information about historical seismicity for Europe and the Mediterranean. Using two of the most recent European seismic databases (AHEAD and EMEC), this paper employs GIS spatial analysis (kernel density estimation) to explore the representativeness and reliability of data captured for late medieval earthquakes. We identify those regions where the occurrence of earthquakes is significantly higher or lower than expected values and inve… Show more

“…The area of Castelseprio is one of the least seismically active in Italy, with very few historical records and macroseismic intensities not exceeding degree 5 [76,77]. However, some traces in S. Giovanni and in the other main buildings of the site, both destroyed and still standing [78], may be explained by some past seismic activity.…”

“…Kernel density estimation is a standard method that can highlight the spatial distribution characteristics of an element [38,39]. Therefore, it is also possible to show the features of maceral groups, and the higher the value, the more aggregated the distribution of macerals in the laminae.…”

“…Catalogues of earthquakes rely heavily on archival sources, so historic seismic events in regions of the world with little surviving written documentation can be severely under-represented [1][2][3][4]. Archaeology offers an alternative avenue of investigation but tends to play an ancillary role at best in historic seismology.…”
