Exploring Progress with Supply Chain Risk Management during the First Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: Background: In response to calls for actionable research that considers ongoing pandemic risk dynamics, we explore how risks experienced and risk mitigation techniques used have changed during the first year of the pandemic. Methods: We used a survey and studied six cases; data were collected both at the start of the pandemic and one year into the pandemic. This paper offers the first empirical exploration of the first full year of the pandemic and provides data points from both early and one year into the pan… Show more

“…Instead, it has greater ability to respond to changes and visibility into supply chain dynamics in (close to) real time. A large focus on in responses to pandemic risks was on improving visibility into the supply-base to inform agile efforts 14 . “…Moreover, these managers did not have time to develop detailed designs and longitudinally study their effectiveness; rather, they faced a great need for actionable research findings and recommendations (Ketchen and Craighead, 2020). Supply chain managers needed to make daily decisions under dynamic conditions (van Hoek, 2021b). APR enables researchers to capture lessons learned by practitioners and enables the development of guidance for others based upon those actions and outcomes.…”

“…This may be particularly worrisome in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It can be argued that the pandemic has only increased the need for societal contributions of research at an accelerated pace (van Hoek, 2020a; 2021b; van Hoek and Loseby, 2021). Ketchen and Craighead (2020) state that, in the context of the pandemic, significant value can be added with research that is actionable (ideas that can be implemented) and focused on effective responses to the pandemic.…”

“…With climate change appearing to be the most pressing issue, there will be many more challenges. In the last two years alone, firms have been exposed to waves of the COVID‐19 pandemic disrupting the industry (van Hoek 2021) both in negative and positive ways. Online hackers have breached IT security and paralyzed global companies and, with them, entire SCs.…”
