The risk scenarios supply chain managers encountered during the COVID19 pandemic were unique and provides many opportunities for learning and the development of more robust risk management approaches and strategies. In this reflection we offer five lessons that provide stepping stones for supply chain managers seeking to create more resilient supply chains. These lessons are: (1) the need to move from relational to social contracting, (2) the need to move from compliance to a force for good, (3) the need to move from planned optimization to agile resiliency, (4) the need to move from ERP and reporting the past to visibility into realtime and (5) the need to resist tendency to revert back to comfort zones. In this paper we reflect upon these lessons aiming to inspire progress in industry and research.

PurposeThis paper offers a novel approach for conducting impactful research on emerging topics or practices. This method is particularly relevant in the face of emerging phenomena and new dynamics, such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on supply chain risks. Because these new phenomena and dynamics are relatively unexplored, little prior knowledge exists in literature and industry, and they represent a large opportunity and/or challenge to practitioners.Design/methodology/approachThe action principles research (APR) approach, as a newer version of critically engaged research (CER), offers comparison against more traditional empirical or intervention-based research. The authors illustrate the approach with a pandemic risk-management study.FindingsThe APR approach originated in the information technology field. It is highly applicable for researchers who are seeking to more expeditiously support decision making and actioning on new dynamics and emerging topics and practice in supply chain management than is allowed by traditional methods and longitudinal CER.Originality/valueIn the context of ongoing calls for relevance, impact and actionable findings on pandemic risk management, this paper describes an approach to developing timely findings that are actionable for practitioners and that advance science around dynamic and emerging topics or practices. We hope this will grow societal value of research, particularly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the new dynamics and uncertainties that managers face in modern supply chains.

Disruptions and rising costs in global supply chains due to COVID-19, climate change, and geopolitical tensions have led to supernormal profits, substantially more recognition of the importance of the sector and management functions associated with it, and a potential “golden age” for a career in logistics and supply chain management (LSCM). This article provides a general overview of the opportunities arising from global LSCM trends. Motivated by student views and comments, the authors have surveyed leading academics and senior practitioners globally across the key LSCM functions to obtain a comprehensive view on the future skills required to excel in a career in supply chain management. Their findings suggest a multitude of future-proof skills centred around technical (e.g., data analytics), soft (e.g., creativity) and cross-functional skills, which they then use to discuss implications for job profiles, graduates (i.e., learn to learn) and LSCM professionals. Given the variety and complexity of the identified skills and LSCM functions, in addition to a compounding LSCM talent shortage, the authors propose changes in LSCM offerings at universities and other tertiary education providers, with a focus on unlearning and life-long learning.
