Exploring Product Development in Industrialized Housing to Facilitate a Platform Strategy

Abstract: Industrialized house-building companies are offering unique products by adopting an engineer-to-order (ETO) strategy. Client satisfaction is achieved by adaptation of product solutions and swift introduction of new technology in combination with cost-efficient production and short lead-time for completion. Product development is executed in collaboration with the clients and changes in requirements are frequent. The use of product platforms, where external and internal efficiency are well-balanced, has been ac… Show more

“…As product design and production are introduced in real projects, the ability to develop generic solutions to be reused in upcoming projects is hindered. Predefinitions in house-building platforms are stored in documents (Lennartsson and Elgh, 2018) and within CAD-software, where the aim is to develop BIM-models automatically. The use of CAD-tools in a project setting has less focus on process flow and platform standardization (Lundkvist et al, 2015).…”

“…The standardized product and process platforms are the foundations of IC products and are responsible for decreasing conventional construction complexities (Viana et al 2017;Lennartsson and Elgh 2018;Larsson et al, 2014). Product modeling experts and domain knowledge experts on the product and its lifecycle processes develop IC product platforms (Malmgren, Jensen, and Olofsson 2011).…”

“…Product modeling experts and domain knowledge experts on the product and its lifecycle processes develop IC product platforms (Malmgren, Jensen, and Olofsson 2011). The technical platform (TP) identifies product families and house models to show product structures (Lennartsson and Elgh 2018). The TP also decomposes building parts, which help with mass customization.…”

“…In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on the platform concept in industrialized housing [19][20][21]. Product platforms embody an intent to reuse knowledge in transforming customer demands over to functional requirements and design parameters in a product [22].…”

“…Consequently, manual transfer between different software is necessary. State of practice in industrialized house building displays disorganized management of assets [21]. Modular product architecture is not supported by aligning processes and management of assets.…”
