Exploring possibilities for an alternative approach in experimental schistosomiasis mansoni: the peritoneal cavity of mice

Abstract: The schistosome oviposition and granuloma constitution in the peritoneal cavity of AKR/J mice were evaluated. Groups of mice intraperitoneally infected with cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni were weekly euthanized during the acute (56 to 84 days post-infection (DPI)) and chronic (147 to 175 DPI) phase of infection. Schistosome developmental stages obtained via peritoneal lavage and perfusion of the portal system were inspected, counted and fixed, and peritoneal granulomata were then processed for histology. The… Show more

“…Milk proteins are considered one of the main allergens for humans (Rona et al 2007;Vargas-Bello-Perez et al 2019). For instance, β-casein, βlactoglobulin, lactoferrin, and immunoglobulins from cow milk are common allergens for infants (Khalesi et al 2017;Mati et al 2017). Dromedary camel milk is characterized by reduced β-caseins content and the absence of βlactoglobulin, which contributes to the reduced allergy in dromedary camel milk consumers (Konuspayeva et al 2009).…”

“…The high numbers of peritoneal macrophages presumably result from the local proliferation of peritoneal macrophages, and/or an influx of blood monocytes into the peritoneum, while further studies are needed to clarify. We speculate that the underline mechanisms are closely related to the schistosome eggs and/or secreted antigens that existed in the peritoneal cavity [46].…”
