Exploring population genetic structure in three species of Lesser Antillean bats

Abstract: We explore population genetic structure in phyllostomid bats (Ardops nichollsi, Brachyphylla cavernarum and Artibeus jamaicensis) from the northern Lesser Antilles by investigating the degree to which island populations are genetically differentiated. Our hypothesis, that the island populations are genetically distinct because of a combination of founding events, limited migration and genetic drift exacerbated by catastrophe-induced fluctuations in population size, is derived from a priori hypotheses erected i… Show more

“…Considering recent documentation of potential mitochondrial recombination events in mammals (31), we tested for mitochondrial recombination among these species, and our results failed to identify potential mitochondrial recombination among A. jamaicensis, A. planirostris, and/or A. schwartzi (SI Materials and Methods). Additionally, previous analyses have rejected incomplete lineage sorting with regard to A. schwartzi mtDNA haplotypes (32).…”

“…The 95 % CI's of N ef were calculated based on the 95 % CI's of h values (Edwards and Beerli 2000). In the hypothetical population trees, branch widths were scaled proportional to total N ef (Carstens et al 2004).…”
