The quality of indoor air exerts influence on the wellbeing of people. However, people rarely notice a constant and creeping deterioration of indoor air. Especially in enclosed places where several people get together, like meeting rooms, school rooms and public transportation, bad air quality might cause a reduction of cognitive performance, increased headache, fatigue and sleepiness. This paper describes and discusses a privacy respecting system, built with low cost IoT components and open-source software, that informs room occupants about bad air quality with ambient lights. Additionally, the status of the windows is indicated so that they are not forgotten to be closed after airing. We conducted a workshop with an implementation of the system with five users and present the results which show the usefulness and desirability of ambient notifications for indoor air quality monitoring.

There seems to be a danger to carelessly replace routine tasks in homes through automation with IoT-technology. But since routines such as watering houseplants also have positive influences on inhabitants' wellbeing, they should be transformed through carefully performed designs. To this end, an attempt to use technology for augmenting a set of houseplants' nonverbal communication capabilities is presented. First, we describe in detail how implicit interactions have been designed to support inhabitants in watering their plants through meaningful interactions. Then, we report on a field study with 24 participants, comparing two alternative design implementations based on contrasting embodied interaction technologies (i.e., augmented reality and embedded computing technology). The study results highlight shortcomings of today's smartphone mediated augmented reality compared to physical interface alternatives, considering measurements of perceived attractiveness and expected effects on determinants of wellbeing, and discusses potentials of combining both modalities for future solutions.

Have you ever experienced a mirror that not only "sees" how you see yourself, but tells you how others perceive you? May such a smartmirror help not only adapt/improve oneself externally (look) but also internally (mood, emotions)? What are the expectations, fears (privacy)? The acceptance of such a smart thing requires approaches that go beyond technology-driven designs. In this paper, we report on the construction of an affective emotion-sensitive smartmirror as a smart piece of furniture for smarthomes and explorative studies with that system which address somaesthetics and aims to help inhabitants in self-reflection. The paper presents and discusses the prototype implementation and the results of a study in which the ideas, concerns, and experiences for/with the self-reflection capabilities of the affective smartmirror were explored by participants using the prototype as a technology probe.
