Exploring omega‐3 fatty acids, enzymes and biodiesel producing thraustochytrids from Australian and Indian marine biodiversity

Abstract: The marine environment harbours a vast diversity of microorganisms, many of which are unique, and have potential to produce commercially useful materials. Therefore, marine biodiversity from Australian and Indian habitat has been explored to produce novel bioactives, and enzymes. Among these, thraustochytrids collected from Indian habitats were shown to be rich in saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), together constituting 51-76% of total fatty acids (TFA). Indian and Australian… Show more

“…Enzymes, antimicrobials, and biopesticides have been isolated from mangrove fungi (Cheng et al 2009). Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids producing microalgae have also been found in mangrove forests (Gupta et al 2016b). Anyhow, it is strongly emphasized that any mangrove-based lignocellulosic biomass exploitation must be only applied in mangrove ecosystems where conservation efforts are well implemented, or refrain otherwise.…”

“…For the process to become effective, it requires a lipase with excellent fatty acid selectivity. Efforts to isolate a fatty acid-selective lipase or to improve the natural lipases for fatty acid selectivity have failed to provide fruitful results [20,21]. In this work, we took a lipase from Geobacillus thermoleaverans (GTL) as a model protein and engineered it to enhance its ω-3 FAs selectivity using semirational and rational approaches.…”
