Exploring Music-Based Rehabilitation for Parkinsonism through Embodied Cognitive Science

Abstract: Recent embodied approaches in cognitive sciences emphasize the constitutive roles of bodies and environment in driving cognitive processes. Cognition is thus seen as a distributed system based on the continuous interaction of bodies, brains, and environment. These categories, moreover, do not relate only causally, through a sequential input–output network of computations; rather, they are dynamically enfolded in each other, being mutually implemented by the concrete patterns of actions adopted by the cognitive… Show more

“…Before we start, we should note that similar insights have already been addressed in music scholarship (e.g., Clarke, 2005 ; Reybrouck, 2005 , 2012 ; Leman, 2007 ; Leman et al, 2009 ; Krueger, 2013 ; Addessi, 2014 , 2015 ; Leman and Maes, 2015 ; Schiavio and Altenmüller, 2015 ; Schiavio and van der Schyff, 2016 ; Schiavio et al, 2016 ). And indeed, the orientation we develop here has antecedents in—and is inspired by—the work of Piaget ( 1952 , 1964 ); Imberty ( 1995 , 2009 ), and Delalande ( 1984 , 1998 , 2009 , 2013 ) among others.…”

“…Furthermore, music science is a field of research that investigates the impact of music on cognition. For instance, the "4E cognitive science" framework, has been recently adopted in music research by some authors (Schiavio and Altenmüller, 2015;Krueger, 2018;van der Schyff and Krueger, 2019). "4E" stands for Embodied, Embedded, Extended, and Enactive -four overlapping principles that help describe mental life in a novel and fascinating way.…”

“…The 4E framework is currently being developed by a handful of scholars in association with musical cognition (e.g., Krueger, 2014 , 2016 ; Schiavio and Altenmüller, 2015 ; van der Schyff, 2017 ; Linson and Clarke, forthcoming ). It is also explored in biological contexts by Barrett ( 2011 , 2015a , b , forthcoming ) as an alternative to the brain bound (and arguably anthropomorphizing) approach of traditional computationalism.…”
