Exploring hospital compliance with the primary nursing care model: validating an inventory using the Delphi method

Abstract: Background The primary nursing care model is considered a personalized model of care delivery based on care continuity and on the relationship between the nurse and patient. Primary nursing checklists are not often mentioned in the literature; however, they represent a valid instrument to develop, implement, and evaluate primary nursing. The aim of this study was to create a structured checklist to explore hospital compliance in primary nursing. Methods … Show more

“…More than 90% of the nurses were trained in PN in a collaborative hospital (oncology hospital in Milan). (iii) Finally, during the implementation, a group of three expert nurses with knowledge of PN supported PN implementation in the studied wards to ensure that every patient was allocated to a primary nurse (Cocchieri et al, 2021; Dal Molin et al, 2018).…”

“…Within hospital environments increasingly characterized by patients' complexity, shorter stays, high readmission rates, heavy workloads, skill mixes, and suboptimal staff, nurses' managers may perceive primary nursing as a supportive structure for care related to patientcentered care philosophy [6,10]. Patient-centered care is associated with satisfaction; making care more adapted and focused on the patients' needs can contribute to better outcomes [11,12].…”
