Exploring global meaning in Greek breast cancer patients: validation of the Life Attitude Profile—Revised (LAP‐R)

Abstract: The LAP-R is a reliable and valid measure of global meaning in life, when administered to breast cancer patients. The use of LAP-R in evaluating meaning-centered psychotherapy interventions for patients with cancer is emphasized.

“…Currently, different instruments for the evaluation of purpose are used, the most popular of which include: the Life Purpose Questionnaire (LPQ; Hutzell, 1989) — mainly used in the United States (Campbell, 2012; Cotton Bronk, 2014; Hutzell, 1989); the Seeking of Noetic Goals Test (SONG, Crumbaugh, 1977) — administered both in the United States (Schulenberg, Baczwaski, & Buchanan, 2014; Yarnell, 1972) and Italy (Brunelli et al, 2012); and the Life Attitude Profile (LAP; Reker & Peacock, 1981), adapted to different contexts such as Germany (Mehnert & Koch, 2008), Canada (Peacock & Reker, 1982; Reker & Peacock, 1981), China (Ho, 1990), Greece (Anagnostopoulos, Slater, Fitzsimmons, & Kolokotroni, 2011) and Turkey (Erci, 2008; Erci & Özdemir, 2013). However, one of the most widely accepted instruments in the literature is the Purpose in Life Test (PIL; Crumbaugh & Maholick, 1964).…”

“…From this perspective, the difficulty differentiating the two constructs may lie in the interdependence between the two, that is, to have life goals and a sense of direction from the past, the present, and the future requires a thorough understanding of oneself. This, however, does not seem to be a problem, to the extent that a high conceptual association between both constructs can be stated (Anagnostopoulos et al 2011). These findings suggest that there is evidence against the hypothesised factor structure, although in this case 3 factors are considered and not 4 as it was postulated in the beginning.…”

“…As far as we can ascertain, they do not. For example, a brief survey of studies using the LAP-R shows that ratings on the most relevant subscale (purpose/coherence: e.g., “I have a mission in life that gives me a sense of direction”; “I have a clear understanding of the ultimate meaning of life”), indeed, fall in the “pretty meaningful” ballpark (e.g., Anagnostopoulos, Slater, Fitzsimmons, & Kolokotroni, 2011; Nicholson et al, 1994, among others). It is quite unlikely that the levels of meaning in life reported in our original analyses are due to the specific questionnaires used.…”
