Exploring Geothermal Manifestations in Ie Jue, Indonesia: Enhancing Safety with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Aprianto Aprianto,
Aga Maulana,
Teuku Rizky Noviandy
et al.

Abstract: Geothermal energy is a renewable resource derived from the Earth's interior that provides an environmentally friendly alternative. Indonesia is at the forefront of geothermal potential, possessing ample resources primarily concentrated in places like Sumatra. However, there is a requirement for greater exploitation of this potential. This research utilizes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and thermal imaging to detect geothermal indications in the Ie Jue region of Sumatra within the province of Aceh, Indonesia.… Show more

“…Additionally, geothermal fluids ascend to the Earth's surface through fissures in rocks and are shown by various phenomena such as hot springs, mud pools, fumaroles, solfatara, and changes in rock formations [4]. Presently, the use of geothermal energy is highly diverse, encompassing electricity generation and non-electric applications like space heating, drying agricultural and livestock products, greenhouses, warm water pools, geothermal spas, and medicinal properties [5][6][7].…”

“…Urgent action is needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the transition to renewable energy is a key part of the solution [11,12]. Indonesia has the potential to replace conventional energy sources with renewable energy sources due to the large number of energy sources in Indonesia [13][14][15]. Energy sources that can be used include geothermal energy, water energy, wind energy, bioenergy (bioethanol, biodiesel, and biomass), marine energy, nuclear energy, and solar energy [16].…”

“…Geothermal energy offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing Indonesia's reliance on energy imports [5,6]. Despite these benefits, geothermal energy development in Indonesia faces significant barriers, primarily due to the high investment and operational costs associated with its implementation [7,8]. As a result, this valuable resource remains underutilized, mainly hindering the country's progress towards a more sustainable energy future.…”
