Even when employed, English oral communication skills proficiency continues to be an asset; mastering the skill is advantageous. The notion has driven comprehensive studies on communication, including apprehension, yet the focus on workplace contexts remains minimal. Therefore, this investigation aims to discern communication apprehension’s effect on staff’s communication skills, their administrative tasks, and the institution, to support the skill enhancement. Utilizing the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension instrument and a purposive sampling, the study’s explanatory sequential mixed method design sampled institution’s one hundred fifteen administrative staff. The staff communication apprehension levels were recorded as moderate, with the highest in delivering public speeches. Nevertheless, interview results proved differently to extend worrying trends among staff. The trend could jeopardize staff’s personality and productivity in the long run. The mediocre level also hinted at skill’s stagnant inclination or deterioration if it is not consistently used in conducting workplace tasks or events. The need for an impactful lifelong learning professional development plan to improve staff English oral communication skills is apparent by the University. The university's plan also need to include supporting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for their employees.

Foreign language learning as stipulated in the Malaysian Education Blueprint as one of the important facets towards developing a human capital. Upholding this aspiration, Malaysian students at the higher institutions are encouraged to take up a foreign language course throughout their study period. However, learning a foreign language can be a daunting and traumatic experience to many due to several reasons with gender role being one of the most prominent factors. Hence, this quantitative study is done to explore the comparison of fear of learning a foreign language across gender. The study involved 202 students from seven different foreign language courses namely German, Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Italian and French from Universiti Teknologi MARA, UiTM, Shah Alam. A survey adapted from Wenden and Rubin (1987) andHorwitz, Horwitz andCope (1986) was distributed through Google Form. The data shown that female students experienced greater fear of foreign language learning across all elements under this study namely communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation and test anxiety, as opposed to their male counterparts. Although male students showed equal level of self-consciousness when speaking, their anxiety seemed to be lower than the females. The study could be an invaluable source to inform foreign language teaching especially in creating a stress-free environment for learning.

Introduction. Communication apprehension is significant in understanding the language skills acquisition of foreign language students. However, studies on communication apprehension have been devoted mainly to second language learners of the English Language. Consequently, there is, in the body of literature, insufficient evidence to understand factors that impact communication apprehension of third language learners. This gap can limit the capacity of researchers interested in foreign language to understand the mechanism underlying third language learners’ communication apprehension. This warranted the need to investigate the predictive powers of socio-demographic variables, academic motivation, and self-efficacy on the communication apprehension of French, Chinese and German third language learners in Nigerian Federal universities. Method. A hierarchical regression analysis was conducted on a sample of 278 third language learners (French n = 148; Chinese n = 78 and German n =52). Socio-demographic variables (age, gender and language of specialization), dimensions of academic motivation (intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, motivational strength) and self-efficacy served as the predictor variables while communication apprehension was the criterion variable. Results. Results revealed that while the socio-demographic variables were not significant predictors, intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy negatively and significantly predicted third language learners’ communication apprehension whereas motivational strength became a positive and significant predictor of third language learners’ communication apprehension only when their self-efficacy was entered in the model. Discussions and conclusions. Based on the findings, it was concluded that possession of strong self-efficacy beliefs and high intrinsic motivation might be essential for third language learners to overcome their communication apprehension.
