Exploring Factors Influencing Injury Severity of Vehicle At-Fault Accidents: A Comparative Analysis of Passenger and Freight Vehicles

Abstract: The objective of this study is to find factors influencing the injury severity of vehicle at-fault accidents in Shenyang (China), and discuss the commonalities and differences between passenger and freight vehicle accidents. We analyzed 1647 traffic accidents from 2015 to 2017, in which motor vehicles were fully or mainly responsible, including 1164 traffic accidents caused by passenger vehicles and 483 traffic accidents caused by freight vehicles. Twenty influencing factors from the aspects of accident, drive… Show more

“…Trauma is one of today's major causes of human death and disabilities [ 37 ], and young adults are the largest demographic, correlated with social interactions and exposure to labor [ 38 , 39 ], which made it a heavy burden for the society [ 40 , 41 ]. As been defined in terms of a high ISS score (≥16) and described as a condition of “severely injured” or “multiple traumata,” polytrauma has a high mortality rate and a high incidence of impairment.…”

“…Beyond the physical and psychological damage to victims which, in the extreme, can lead to death (with pedestrians and cyclists being more vulnerable), there are other economic costs of damage, insurance, and medical care [28][29][30][31]. Road accidents are influenced by urban density and the road infrastructure, but also the individual behavior of users of the transport system (as drivers, pedestrians, cyclists) [32].…”

“…Many methods for analyzing the relationships among the causes that may lead to accidents and the corresponding possible consequences are available, which can be categorized as statistic regression models (i.e., multivariate regression and multinomial logit) [1,[14][15][16][17][18] and machine learning methods (typical as Bayesian network and decision tree) [19][20][21][22][23]. Desai et al [1] presented a sequence of statistical models (i.e., partial least squares, spline regression, and Box-Cox transformations) to estimate the population affected and the impact of the cost incurred as a result of hazmat accidents.…”
