Exploring connections between pollinator health and human health

Abstract: Despite recent advances in understanding the role of biodiversity in ecosystem-service provision, the links between the health of ecosystem-service providers and human health remain more uncertain. During the past decade, an increasing number of studies have argued for the positive impacts of healthy pollinator communities (defined as functionally and genetically diverse species assemblages that are sustained over time) on human health. Here, we begin with a systematic review of these impacts, finding only two… Show more

“…Furthermore, the different pollinator guilds might show distinct changes in the same type of traits under plant invasion (Grass et al, 2014). In addition, a less degraded, more natural and genuinely heterogeneous landscape could be a substantial source of pollinators (Garibaldi et al, 2022; Gill et al, 2016; but see also Lázaro & Gómez‐Martínez, 2022), which may also be the case for adjacent invaded sites (Charlebois & Sargent, 2017), and so mask the local effect of invasion. Furthermore, if the alien plant species differs markedly from the native species, its presence may increase functional diversity initially.…”

“…A beporzók az emberi egészség megőrzésében többrétű szerepet játszanak (Garibaldi et al 2022). A megfelelő, egészséges táplálkozás egyrészt nemcsak a kellő kalóriabevitelt, hanem a változatos tápanyagkínálatot is jelenti.…”

“…A beporzók nemcsak az ember fizikai, hanem a mentális egészségéhez is hozzájárulnak. A zöld környezet, a természettel való kapcsolat, vagy a virágok esztétikai értéke mind fontos szerepet játszanak a lelki és így a testi egészség fenntartásában, városokban és vidéken élők számára egyaránt (Garibaldi et al 2022). A természetben eltöltött pihenés, sportolás, kirándulás, bármilyen formájú kikapcsolódás számos módon segíti az emberi szervezet egyensúlyban tartását (Mihók et al 2021).…”

“…The direct link between pollinator health and human health could help highlight the importance of healthy pollinator communities and pollination services. In this issue Garibaldi et al [79] show that very few studies have evaluated aspects of pollinator health and human health together, and these contributions were limited to the fields of nutrition, medicine provisioning, mental health and environmental quality. Benefits are provided through more nutritious food, an estimated 28 000 animal-pollinated medicinal plants, products such as honey, the maintenance of green landscapes that enhance mental well-being, and sustainable practices associated with pollinators.…”
