Exploring Combined Influences of Seasonal East Atlantic (EA) and North Atlantic Oscillation (Nao) on the Temperature-Precipitation Relationship in the Iberian Peninsula

Abstract: The combined influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the East Atlantic (EA) patterns on the covariability of temperatures and precipitation in 35 stations of the Iberian Peninsula during the period 1950-2019 is analysed in this work. Four EA-NAO composites were defined from teleconnection patterns positive and negative phases: EA+NAO+, EA+NAO-, EA-NAO+, and EA-NAO-. Daily data of maximum and minimum temperature were used to obtain seasonal means (TX, and TN, respectively), and the covariability o… Show more

“…For the minimum AI‐winters in 2001/2018, there is a shift of the wind field toward zonally running ZWSC‐lines in (Figures 4d and 4e), yielding a more zonal NAC (Marshall et al., 2001). Considering the combination of NAO/EAP winter‐phases (Figure 6 in Foukal & Lozier, 2017; Figure 1 in Rodrigo, 2021), the winter AI‐maxima in 2006/2011 both show a slightly negative NAO and a significant negative EAP. For the AI‐minima in 2001/2018 the NAO is negative/insignificant while EAP is strongly positive in 2001 and insignificant in 2018 (despite a significant shift of the wind field).…”

“…In addition, in the study of Rodrigo (2021) accomplished in 2021 for analyzing the binary correlation of the two oscillations NAO and EA on the temperature in the Iberian Peninsula, four compounds of the positive and negative poles of these two oscillations were identified. Results have made it clear that there is a slight effect of the relationships between the variables on the temperature in the Iberian Peninsula.…”
