Exploring Australian hazard map exceedance using an Atlas of historical ShakeMaps

Abstract: This article explores several area-based tests of long-term seismic hazard forecasts for the Australian continent. Using the observed seismicity, ShakeMaps are calculated for earthquakes that are expected to have generated moderate-to-high levels of ground shaking within continental Australia in the past 50 years (January 1972 through December 2021). A “composite ShakeMap” is generated that extracts the maximum peak ground acceleration “observed” in this 50-year period for any site within the continent. The fr… Show more

“…Comparisons for France and Nepal yield similar results (Drouet et al, 2020;Salditch, 2021). Similar studies using ShakeMap data for Australia also demonstrate that the models appear to predict higher shaking than observed in the last 50 years (Allen et al, 2023). Thus, a similar discrepancy arises in different regions for shaking datasets and hazard maps developed by different groups and approaches.…”

“…A similar concept as the one put forward in this study has been recently applied in other countries 27 , and although it is not intended herein as a formal testing of any of the PSHA models, which would require one to compute (for each of the PSHA studies) the distribution of the random variable representing the exceedance area in 12 years, it still enables a simple comparison of hazard maps against available data.…”
