Exploring attrition, fidelity, and effectiveness of wraparound services among low-income youth of different racial backgrounds.

Abstract: Collaborative community-based mental health services improve youth outcomes and physicians and school personnel should strive to be part of these teams. Further research is needed to more closely examine the challenges of helping youth to meet the goals associated with their wraparound services. Relatively higher service attrition rates in low-income African American youth warrants further investigation. (PsycINFO Database Record

“…A family's cultural context also influences its adaptive systems (Theron & Theron, 2013). YAP's holistic service approach considers attributes of the children themselves, family aspects, and characteristics of their broader social environments (Bergquist, 2013;Luthar et al, 2000, p. 3;Yohannan, Carlson, Shepherd, & Batsche-McKenzie, 2017). YAP's philosophy and practices coincide with that of child welfare leaders who champion comprehensive and coordinated services for vulnerable youth and families that both reduce modifiable risk factors and promote protective factors (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014).…”

“…Within the context of family wraparound services, culturally competent practices involve tailoring services to address the needs, priorities, and perspectives of individuals and groups that may differ according to ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, and other characteristics (Palmer et al., ; Yohannan, Carlson, Shepherd, & Batsche‐McKenzie, ). It is possible that, in this study, our measure of cultural competence was not sufficient in assessing this multidimensional construct.…”

“…Several studies included less common determinations of the empirical basis of the fidelity approach. One study examined the extent to which fidelity measures identify racial disparities in treatment delivery outcomes (e.g., attrition; Yohannan et al, 2017). Two studies examined the relationship between fidelity ratings and treatment and clinical outcomes.…”

“…Further, the methods by which researchers evaluated their fidelity approaches varied substantially, and only a few examined the relationship with outcomes. With a few notable exceptions (e.g., Yohannan et al, 2017), researchers provided limited justification about the rationale for choosing the various strategies to determine empirical support for the fidelity tool or approach. In summary, there are few empirically validated approaches to determine fidelity that are used in real-world settings and most strategies rely on fidelity determinations by outside experts.…”
