Exploring atmospheric radon with airborne gamma-ray spectroscopy

Abstract: Abstract. 222Rn is a noble radioactive gas produced along the 238 U decay chain, which is present in the majority of soils and rocks. As 222 Rn is the most relevant source of natural background radiation, understanding its distribution in the environment is of great concern for investigating the health impacts of low-level radioactivity and for supporting regulation of human exposure to ionizing radiation in modern society. At the same time, 222 Rn is a widespread atmospheric tracer whose spatial distribution i… Show more

“…The aircraft used for the surveys is the Radgyro ( Figure 2 , Figure 3 and Figure 4 ), an experimental autogyro devoted to airborne multiparametric measurements, specifically designed for radiometric surveying [ 14 , 15 ]. The Radgyro is 5.20 m long and 2.8 m high, and has an 83-liter fuel tank placed above the instrumentation to avoid the attenuation of gamma signals coming from the ground due to the interaction with the fuel material.…”

“…Radon being gaseous and chemically inert doesn't react with other elements and because of its high mobility can escape from the soil easily. Although it has harmful effects in closed spaces, its presence in the environment is not perceived by humans and is normally used as an atmospheric tracer because of its relatively long half-life of 3.82 day [3].…”
