Exploring Advantages of Diverse Carbon Nanotube Forests with Tailored Structures Synthesized by Supergrowth from Engineered Catalysts

Abstract: We explored advantages of diverse carbon nanotube forests with tailored structures synthesized by water-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth (supergrowth) from engineered catalysts. By controlling the catalyst film thickness, we synthesized carbon nanotube (CNT) forests composed from nanotubes with different size and wall number. With extensive characterizations, many interesting dependencies among CNT forest structures and their properties, which were unknown previously, were found. For example, mu… Show more

“…There is currently great interest in controlled synthesis of CNTs with unique structures. 9Ϫ18 CNT arrays, in which CNTs are nearly parallel to each other and perpendicular to the substrate, have been widely investigated for many potential applications, such as field emission devices, 3,18 energy storage, 13 gas sensors, 19 and structural composites. 20 Controlling the morphology of CNT arrays is an essential step toward these applications.…”

“…All synthesis reactions were conducted in two types i.e., horizontal (h) and vertical (v) quartz tube furnaces using super growth chemical vapour deposition (SGCVD) methods (Zhao et al 2009;Chiang et al 2011;Yasuda et al 2009;Futaba et al 2009;Yamada et al 2008;Kruszka et al 2014). The investigations were conducted on stainless steel foils.…”

“…These advantages can at first be more readily appreciated in the context of field-emission [67]. A nanotube, with a nanoscale diameter, can have a length that is millions of times larger than its diameter: freestanding nanotubes can be made to lengths of micrometers individually or millimeters [68,69] and beyond in self-supporting arrays (vertically aligned CNT forests). When an electric field is applied to such a high-aspect-ratio structure, it is significantly enhanced near its tip-a fact that we know from basic electrostatics.…”
