Exploratory Trial to Evaluate the Hydroxyapatite Layer Formed by a New Dental Treatment System

Abstract: Objective: A powder jet deposition (PJD) process can be used to create a thick hydroxyapatite (HA) layer on the human tooth surface. The purpose of this exploratory trial was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the hydroxyapatite layer formed by a new dental treatment system for cases of caries, dentin hypersensitivity, or discolored teeth. Methods: A single facility, non-blinded study comparing before and after treatment interventions, without a comparative control, was conducted. A rubber dam was attached… Show more

“…In previous studies, the possibility of applying HA layer as a new restorative material with compositional, chemical and mechanical properties corresponding to those of tooth substance was presented [10][11][12][13]. The PJD is a precise mechanical coating technique with using ultrafine particles which accelerated to several hundred meters per second by the jet flow of carrier gas to fabricate functional surfaces with high efficiency.…”

“…To apply the TiO 2 -HA layers, a newly developed PJD device was used. The specimens were treated by with PJD, using HA-TiO 2 particles synthesized by Sangi Co., Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan), in which TiO 2 was added as a color regulator [17]. The microstructural properties of TiO 2 -HA layers were evaluated from SEM and the three-dimensional profiles: surface thickness.…”

“…The objectives of the present study were also to evaluate the color differences of TiO 2 -HA layers. The color was measured using the CIE L * a * b * color measurement system on the spectrophotometer (CMS-35FS/C; Murakami Color Research Laboratory, Tokyo, Japan) [17]. The CIE L * a * b * system is composed of three coordinates: L * (lightness, from 0 = black to 100 = white), a * (from -a = green to +a = red), and b (from -b = blue to + b = yellow).…”
