Exploratory Research of CO2, Noise and Metabolic Energy Expenditure in Lisbon Commuting

Abstract: The lower cost of sensors is making possible the acquisition of big data sets in several applications and research areas. Indoor air quality and commuter exposure to pollutants are some of these areas, which can have impacts on our livelihood. The main objective of this exploratory research was to assemble portable equipment along with a prototype, one low-cost and easy to replicate in any location worldwide. We answer how CO2, noise and energy expenditure compare in different transportation modes with indoor … Show more

“…The months of July and August are often associated with vacation time or school break period in Portugal. Thus, we register the lowest NO 2 concentrations during summertime as the circulating vehicle stock decreases considerably [47]. During the winter, as everyone is back from vacation and GR values start decreasing, we see the highest mean peaks of NO 2 .…”

“…We reiterate that to make more concise arguments, we would need more VOC data which is not sufficiently available for the 8-year historical analysis comparison. Hopefully, going forward, with the increase of data availability from the crescent adoption of low-cost sensors, as stated by the author in another work [47], we can see these data availability flaws fixed. Nonetheless, we can still suggest with good grounds the possibility that Lisbon was VOC-sensitive from 2010-2018, but recognize more research is needed [11,48].…”

“…Low-cost sensing is a field that is undergoing expansion as technology improves. There are good indications on the viability of using these sensors for air quality monitoring [11,12].This research seeks to find ground-level O 3 relations with climatic influences (global radiation, temperature, and precipitation) and NO x precursors near a city traffic roundabout. It also aims at proving the performance of LCS in real urban environments and how these could be used to spread measuring spots, increasing the historically available data.…”
