Exploratory experimentation and taxonomy of experimentation

Abstract: Transformation of the philosophy of science during the last three decades is largely based on the philosophers? insights in the experimental side of science. Central issues in this new field, such as classification of basic elements and types of experimentation, are still developing. Subject of this work will be one of these types, Steinle?s ?exploratory experimentation? (EE), and its place in taxonomy of experimentation. After presenting an array of historical cases of experimentation, I ana… Show more

“…The hypothesis testing dimension (2), embodying differences in the role and development of the background theory, oscillates from experimenting with the aim of testing a hypothesis or theory on one hand, to measuring a parameter or simply describing some important aspect of nature on the other (e.g. exploratory experimentation (Stojanovic, 2013)). These two dimensions create a six-fold classification of experiments, 4 with many intermediate forms in between.…”

“…The notion of exploratory experimentation emerged from in-depth analyses of historical-epistemological constellations and has proven productive both as a heuristic tool for historical investigations and as a category for philosophical reflection on scientific methodology (Karaca 2017, Sørensen 2010, vol. 2, Steinle 2016, Stojanović 2013, Waters 2007. Exploratory practices in the theoretical sphere instead, as noted in the Introduction to this Special Issue, have attracted much less attention.…”
