Midwives’ competence in providing continuity of care using mobile health (mHealth) applications is limited in developing countries. This study identified and explored midwives’ competency and service needs to develop mHealth in Midwifery Continuity of Care (MCOC) education and training. It used an explanatory sequential mixed method, and was conducted from August to December 2021. A cross-sectional approach was used to find the characteristics and competency scope of 373 midwives in West Java, and continued with a qualitative design through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) of 13 midwives. Descriptive data analysis (frequency, mean, deviation standard) and qualitative data analysis (coding, sub-themes, and theme) were conducted. In terms of the x midwives who participated in this study, more than half were aged £ 35 years (58.98%), with a working period > 10 years (56.30%), had diploma degrees (71.12%), and used smartphones on average 1–12 h/day (78.28%). Most midwives needed to develop competency in the MCOC scope, including its early detection of the risk factor of complications and treatment management. They were concerned about the purposes, benefits, and design of mHealth. In summary, midwives’ competency indicators for early detection are more needed in MCOC using mHealth. Further research is required to evaluate midwives’ competence in MCOC using mHealth.

This quasi-experimental study aimed to assess the impact of a midwife-led psycho-education intervention on reducing fear of childbirth (FOC) and perceived stress (PS) in pregnant women. The present study involved 96 pregnant women. The intervention group received three 30–45 min telephone sessions using ‘BELIEF’ (Birth Emotion-Looking to Improve Expectant Fear) psycho-education approach. The outcomes were assessed using questionnaires on childbirth attitudes and PS. Data analysis was performed using Stata version 17. In the intervention group, the mean score for FOC decreased from 39.41 ± 7.02 to 29.91 ± 5.60 (9.5; 24.1%). The mean difference (MD) of 28.22% was statistically significant (adjusted MD: −10.51, 95% CI: −11.60, −9.41, P < 0.001). In the intervention group, mean scores for PS decreased from 22.77 ± 6.94 to 18.23 ± 5.69 (4.54; 19.93%). In the control group, scores increased from 22.68 ± 6.76 to 24.82 ± 6.58 (2.14; 9.43%). The 29.36% MD was statistically significant (aMD: −6.95, 95% CI: −8.73, −5.18, P < 0.001). The findings of this study indicate that the midwife-led psycho-education intervention, utilizing the ‘BELIEF’ protocol over the telephone, has a significant effect on reducing FOC and PS, as well as increasing the preference for vaginal birth.

Usability assessment using m-Health app usability questionnaire on the iPosyandu application in Central Sulawesi

The iPosyandu mobile application is one of the android-based smartphone applications that contains information about the growth and development of babies/toddlers and about pregnancy as an effort to reduce maternal mortality rate (MMR). This study's objective is to evaluate the usability of the iPosyandu mobile application and offer modifications to increase its reusability. The study was conducted on 88 pregnant women at the Lere Health Center and Kinovaro Health Center which were divided into 44 people from signaling areas and 44 people from signal-difficult areas using mixed method research with an explanatory sequential design. The m-Health app usability questionnaire (MAUQ) is employed in the quantitative stage, whereas the focus group discussions (FGD) approach is used in the qualitative stage. The calculation of the MAUQ score in this study showed that each statement item contained in 3 variables or aspects in the MAUQ questionnaire got a good score with a total average scale of 6.26 (89.41%) in the signaled area and 6.29 (89.81%) in the signal-difficult area where the score was >4. There are still some barriers to using the program, thus enhancements must be done to increase user comfort.
