Exploration of Sunflower Oil As a Renewable Biomass Source to Develop Scalable and Highly Effective Corrosion Inhibitors in a 15% HCl Medium at High Temperatures

Abstract: The feasibility study of utilizing sunflower oil as renewable biomass source to develop highly effective inhibitors for mild steel corrosion (MS) in the 15% HCl medium was done by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (DEIS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), supported with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) techniques. Moreover, a complementary theoretica… Show more

“…As evidenced by other reports, 8,26,32 the concentrated distribution of the frontier orbitals (CTM and ATC) is conductive for the rapid charge interaction of an inhibitor with the metal surface; meanwhile, the polarized distribution of the frontier orbitals (ATA and CCA) favors the parallel adsorption conguration of an inhibitor. Furthermore, the four SPRE constituents exhibit a surface electron density with a prominent positive charge; consequently, these molecules preferentially adsorb on the C-steel surface via the binding bridge with pre-adsorbed chloride ions (i.e., physisorption).…”

“…It is well-established that the corrosion of C-steel in HCl medium consists of anodic metal dissolution and cathodic hydrogen evolution. 32 SPRE adsorbs on the active sites of the C-steel surface, isolates the metal from aggressive species, and thus reduces the corrosion current density. In addition, the almost parallel cathodic curves shown in Fig.…”

“…It causes leaks in pipelines, tubing, tanks, and other equipment, resulting in process shutdown, environmental contamination, and drastic economic losses. 6,7 Well acidizing is the most important step in the gas and oil drilling industry, in which the rock reservoir stimulation technique is applied to enhance productivity using hydrochloric acid, formic acid, hydrofluoric acid, and acetic acid at 15% concentration. 8−11 In addition, 15% HCl solutions are commonly used for scale removal treatments at temperatures up to 60 °C for eliminating carbonated minerals and iron oxides.…”
