Exploration of Gross Motor Function in Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome

Abstract: Background: Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by a spectrum of motor abilities. While the Aicardi-Goutières syndrome severity score favors severely impacted individuals, there is an unmet need to define tools measuring function across the Aicardi-Goutières syndrome spectrum as potential outcome assessments for future clinical trials. Methods: Gross Motor Function Measure–88 (GMFM-88) and AGS Severity Scale were administered in individuals affected by Aicardi-Goutières sy… Show more

“…6 Test requirements for manual manipulation of kit materials, verbal responses, and timed performance all have the potential to underestimate performance when a child has severe motoric limitations and movement-induced tone issues (dystonia). 9,10 In a population with a large percentage of affected individuals with motor and language impairments, 4,11,12 an individual child's developmental potential may be underappreciated. 13,14 These population-level biases may lead to reduced access to appropriate education environments and appropriate equipment needs.…”
