Exploration of Floral Volatile Organic Compounds in Six Typical Lycoris taxa by GC-MS

Abstract: Lycoris, which is known as the ‘Chinese tulip,’ has diverse flower colors and shapes, and some species have a delicate fragrance. However, limited studies have reported the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of Lycoris. In this study, headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze the floral VOCs of six typical Lycoris taxa. Thirty-two VOCs were identified, including terpenoids, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, and phenols. The aldehyde and terp… Show more

“…Lycoris sprengeri is an important herb, and the Lycoris genus has about 20 species, of which ten are commonly grown in China and Southern Asia ( Shi et al, 2019 ). Previous transcriptomic studies relevant to the Amaryllidaceae family investigated L. aurea ( Wang et al, 2013 ), L. longituba ( Wang et al, 2013 ; Li et al, 2020 ), Allium cepa ( Kim et al, 2015 ), Narcissus pseudonarcissus ( Singh and Desgagné-Penix, 2017 ), and L. sprengeri ( Chang et al, 2011 ).…”

“…However, the emission of a-farnesene together with other potent scents compounds (linalool and phenylethyl salicylate ) increased the numbers of pollinators such as bees and flies which acting like a behavioral modifier to filter out certain species of pollinators. Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) was a method that was widely used to trap and capture emitted volatiles for analysis (Shi et al 2019). Compared to standard headspace extraction that was conducted previously by Hsiao et al (2006) and Chuang et al, (2017), this method managed to profile a broader range of volatiles, in which several new compounds were managed to identify such as copaene, bergamiol, and linalyl anthranilate.…”

“…Concerning the non-fragrant plants, some species can be scentless for human beings while other species might have a subtle scent only detected by some people. Non-fragrant flowers also emit different VOCs such as aliphatic aldehydes, aliphatic alcohols, and phenylpropanoids/benzenoids [ 13 , 14 ]. VOCs’ role in plants is essential and varied from pollinator attraction to defense against predators and growth [ 4 , 15 ].…”
