Exploration and exploitation in product and process innovation in the chemical industry

Abstract: Achieving a well-balanced innovation portfolio is an often advocated goal for R&D managers, but guidelines how to achieve this are scarce in the innovation and management literature. In this study, we investigate the effects that balancing R&D budget allocation between exploratory and exploitative innovation activities has on new product performance. Furthermore, we distinguish between product and process exploratory and exploitative innovation activities offering a new and highly relevant contingency perspect… Show more

“…It Bimplies firm behaviors characterized by search, discovery, experimentation, risk taking, and innovation^ (He & Wong, 2004: 481). Further elaboration argues exploration as a firm's strategic orientation towards experimenting new alternatives and developing new ways to do business, yielding the term Bexploratory orientation^ (Bauer & Leker, 2013). …”

“…As firms need to not only engage in explorative activities to create innovative ideas and products, but also in exploitative activities to appropriate value from them (Bauer and Leker, 2013;Brexendorf et al, 2015;March, 1991), merely focusing on one part of the innovation process may provide an incomplete picture of how national cultural traits impact innovative activity and performance.…”

“…Both activities are essential but compete for the same resources. As a result, achieving an optimum balance between the two to combine internal and external knowledge is a primary requirement for making R&D decisions on search behaviors [14] . More importantly, the exploitation and exploration framework indicates that the key difference between the two is the degree to which search behaviors involve the development of new knowledge and sources of such knowledge creation.…”
