Exploiting space and location as a design framework for interactive mobile systems

Abstract: This paper considers the importance of context in mobile systems. It considers a range of context issues and focus on location as a key issue for mobile systems. A design framework is described consisting of taxonomies of location, mobility, population and device awareness. The design framework informs the construction of a semantic model of space for mobile systems. The semantic model is reflected in a computational model built on a distributed platform that allows contextual information to be shared across a… Show more

“…In this area, all revolves around the user and the services that can be provided to her/him. One fundamental contextual element here is location and the environment surrounding the user [8], even though it was clear from the beginning that context is much more than that [9]. A later and classic work by Dey, in addition to external features such as location, environment and time, included the emotional state of the user as part of the contextual elements (this aspect will be discussed in detail in Section 6).…”

“…state connectivity) is largely in the middle ground. Dix et al's framework [DR00] for mobile context is also focused principally on medium term context with, as would be expected, location being central. However, the faster timescales are not neglected entirely and Heath et al [HM05] mention context-sensitive menus in the sense of reacting differently to images or audio files, and Dey et al's influential Context toolkit [DA01] includes support for context such as "making dinner".…”
