Exploiting Location and Contextual Information to Develop a Comprehensive Framework for Proactive Handover in Heterogeneous Environments

Abstract: The development and deployment of several wireless and cellular networks mean that users will demand to be always connected as they move around. Mobile nodes will therefore have several interfaces and connections will be seamlessly switched among available networks using vertical handover techniques. Proactive handover mechanisms can be combined with the deployment of a number of location-based systems that provide location information to a very high degree of accuracy in different contexts. Furthermore, this … Show more

“…In this paper, we shall be using the concept of Network Dwell Time [11] (NDT) which is an estimate of how long we are expecting a mobile user to stay connected to an AS before moving past its range and connecting to another network. If we know how much traffic a user is generating, we can calculate the load on the network for the duration of NDT and we can then adjust the caching dynamically to compensate for it.…”

“…In [12] Mapp et al show that when a user's velocity and a network's area coverage are known, we can estimate for how long the user will be within the network's boundaries. The result is an estimation of the user's Network Dwell Time (NDT) which is then used for the purpose of allocating network resources proactively.…”

“…Most papers assume that handover does not take a significant time and does not affect overall VANET operation. The Y-Comm architecture [11] was developed to explore proactive handover issues in future mobile networks. It has introduced an advanced handover classification system as well as new concepts such as network dwell time (NDT), time before handover (T BH ) and exit time (ET) [12].…”
