Exploitation of cantaloupe peels for bacterial cellulose production and functionalization with green synthesized Copper oxide nanoparticles for diverse biological applications

Abstract: The promising features of most bacterial celluloses (BC) promote the continuous mining for a cost-effective production approach toward wide and sustainable applications. Herein, cantaloupe peels (CP) were successfully implemented for sustainable BC production. Results indicated that the enzymatically hydrolyzed CP supported the maximum BC production of approximately 3.49 g/L when used as a sole fermentation media. The produced BC was fabricated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (Ch), and loaded with gr… Show more

“…Comparison with other studies highlights distinctions in our results. Specifically, our findings differ from those of K. Saleh et al ( Saleh et al, 2022 ), who obtained BC membrane nanofibers with diameters ranging from 62.14 nm to 83.94 nm under different cultivation conditions. Additionally, El-Gendi et al reported an average nanofiber diameter of 41.10 nm for BC membranes cultivated in HS medium ( El-Gendi et al, 2023 ), while PPPE-generated PPPE-BC membranes exhibited an average fiber diameter of 91.64 nm.…”

“…Among these studies, especially utilization of fruit and vegetable peels, tomato juice, pecan nutshell, or vegetable oil etc. in the BC production become prominent (Güzel & Akpınar, 2018;Bozdağ et al, 2021;Saleh et al, 2022;Varjani et al, 2023). Moreover, food industry by-products such as beet molasses, vinasse, and waste beer fermentation broth can also be valorized with some differences in structural properties when compared with BC obtained by HS-medium usage (Heydorn et al, 2023).…”

“…For instance, fruits such as blackberries, Cornus mas L., blueberries, Citrullus lanatus, grape, Terminalia arjuna and Punica granatum L. , have a high number of anthocyanins, phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid, flavonoids, saccharides and other vitamins (Timoszyk, 2018). Cantaloupe peels also showed potential for the synthesis of CuO-NPs (Saleh et al ., 2022). An additional benefit is provided when NPs are prepared from fruits versus NPs prepared based on the biological method.…”
