The Abbreviated Psychopathy Measure (APM): Two Pilot Studies of a Brief Measure of Psychopathy Traits

Two studies were undertaken to examine preliminary construct validity of a newly developed, abbreviated measure of psychopathy. The Abbreviated Psychopathy Measure (APM) is a 33-item inventory that is closely modeled on the Triarchic Psychopathy Measure (TriPM; Patrick, 2010), with a new and more parsimonious set of items. Analyses in Study 1 (N = 126) found that the Boldness, Meanness, and Disinhibition scales of the APM had high internal consistency reliabilities and were highly correlated with their counterpart scales on the TriPM. The APM Total score was very highly correlated with the TriPM Total score (r = .90). Each of the APM scales was also significantly correlated with a measure of Antisocial Intent. In Study 2 (N = 140), the APM was very highly correlated with the Total score of a 36-item version of the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP; Levenson, Kiehl, & Fitzpatrick, 1995). Additionally, the APM scales were associated differentially with normal range personality variables associated with psychopathy (e.g., Boldness was robustly associated with Extraversion, Meanness was highly and inversely associated with Agreeableness, Disinhibition was robustly and negatively associated with Conscientiousness). The APM appeared to differ most significantly from the TriPM in that APM Boldness was moderately correlated with Meanness and Disinhibition. APM Boldness may capture a more maladaptive quality of boldness relative to TriPM Boldness through a greater emphasis on low harm avoidance or fearlessness in comparison to TriPM Boldness. The APM is potentially a promising brief measure of psychopathy; however, further study is needed to determine whether the moderately inter-correlated APM scales can distinguish among conceptually relevant constructs. Directions for future research are discussed.

Resumen la inclusión en el pcl-r del comportamiento criminal previo como criterio para la evaluación de la psi-copatía en las prisiones, supone que los individuos evaluados como psicópatas en la comunidad por sus consistencias de personalidad no sean detectados al llegar a prisión. Se pretende establecer el perfil diferencial del psicópata no detectado frente al psicópata criminal a nivel familiar, educativo, de consumo y delictivo. La muestra está conformada por 352 internos en prisión que fueron evaluados mediante el PCL-R. Los re-sultados obtenidos confirman que el psicópata no detectado presenta mismas consistencias de personalidad que el psicópata criminal, difiriendo en el estilo de vida; exhibe variables moderadoras durante su desarrollo que le han mantenido alejado del comportamiento criminal; no ha tenido un estilo de vida delictivo, pero mantiene la misma capacidad que el psicópata criminal para la comisión de los delitos más graves, siendo víctimas más frecuentes familiares y parejas. Abstract The previous criminal behavior included in the PCL-R like a criterion to evaluation of the psychopathy in the prisons, suppose that individuals considered as psychopaths in the community for their personality were not detected when they arrive to prison. The aim of this research was to establish the different profile of the undetected psychopath in comparison with criminal psychopath in the familiar, educative, substance abuse and criminal environments. The sample was made up of 352 prisoners evaluated with the PCL-R. Results revealed that undetected psychopath showed the same personality but different lifestyle than criminal psychopath. Moreover, undetected psychopath accounted with moderating variables during his development that avoid them committing criminal behavior. Finally they did not show a criminal lifestyle, however, as the same as a criminal psychopath, they had the capacity to commit serious crimes being their victims their relatives or couples.

Nasilenie cech psychopatii wśród kobiet osadzonych w zakładach karnych Charakterystyka psychospołeczna Abstrakt: Zaprezentowane badanie miało na celu określenie nasilenia cech psychopatii u kobiet przebywających w polskich zakładach karnych oraz zależności pomiędzy nim a warunkami socjalizacji rodzinnej, stylem funkcjonowania interpersonalnego, nasileniem i formami przejawianej agresji oraz hierarchią uznawanych przez nie wartości. Grupa badawcza liczyła 99 kobiet, spośród których wyłoniono trzy grupy nasilenia cech psychopatycznych (opierając się na wynikach uzyskanych w Skali Obserwacyjnej Skłonności Psychopatycznych -PCL-R). Zastosowano takie narzędzia diagnostyczne jak: Skala Agresji (SABD), Skala Ustosunkowań Interpersonalnych (SUI), Skala Wartości Rokeacha (SW), analiza akt penitencjarnych, ankieta i dane z wywiadu. Badanie pokazało, iż wraz ze wzrostem nasilenia cech psychopatycznych w badanych grupach rosła liczba kobiet mających w swej przeszłości doświadczenia przebywania w placówkach opiekuńczych lub opiekuńczo-wychowawczych oraz kontaktu z rodzicem uzależnionym od alkoholu. Zgodnie z przewidywaniami okazało się, iż badane grupy różnią się pod względem przejawianych form agresji (zwłaszcza agresji fizycznej i słownej) oraz irytacji, a także stylów funkcjonowania interpersonalnego. Częściowe potwierdzenie znalazła również hipoteza mówiąca o istnieniu związku pomiędzy hierarchią wartości a nasileniem cech psychopatycznych. Kobiety o wyższym nasileniu cech psychopatycznych niżej ceniły wartość bezpieczeństwa rodziny w swojej hierarchii wartości ostatecznych.
