Expert consensus on the bone repair strategy for osteoporotic fractures in China

Abstract: Osteoporotic fractures, also known as fragility fractures, are prevalent in the elderly and bring tremendous social burdens. Poor bone quality, weak repair capacity, instability, and high failure rate of internal fixation are main characteristics of osteoporotic fractures. Osteoporotic bone defects are common and need to be repaired by appropriate materials. Proximal humerus, distal radius, tibia plateau, calcaneus, and spine are common osteoporotic fractures with bone defect. Here, the consensus from the Oste… Show more

“…At present, the implementation of secondary fracture prevention worldwide is very unsatisfactory, and recent studies have emphasized the individualized management of patients after PVP surgery, especially the use of anti-osteoporosis drugs ( 29 31 ), We analyzed the stress of this special type of sandwich vertebral patients in daily life through mechanical experiments and explored and provided mechanical theoretical support for patients in the management of postoperative spinal posture. In our study, we found that T12 stress was not maximal in all groups except the M-T12, so the stress experienced by the sandwich vertebrae was not necessarily maximal during daily activities, depending on the degree of daily spinal curvature.…”

“…Finally, 12 patients who underwent hip arthroplasty were included in our study and divided into four groups according to whether they had sarcopenia and osteoporosis. The diagnosis of sarcopenia and osteoporosis followed the guidelines mentioned previously ( Cruz-Jentoft et al, 2019 ; Zhang H. et al, 2022 ). Skeletal muscle tissue and bone tissue samples—5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm each—were collected from the vastus lateralis muscle and femoral head during surgery; due to the nature of joint replacement, this had no impact on the patients.…”

“…According to a European Union (EU) survey, there may be 22 million women and 5.5 million men in the EU with osteoporosis ( Hernlund et al, 2013 ). Fragility fractures caused by osteoporosis have become one of the most severe and deadly health problems in the world, and the prevention of osteoporotic fractures has become the most significant aspect of managing the condition in patients ( Zhang H. et al, 2022 ). The commonest site of fragility fractures is the spine, and the deadliest is the hip.…”

“…It has been reported that the number of individuals with osteoporosis exceeds 200 million, and this number is still rising in recent decades ( Langdahl, 2021 ; Khandelwal and Lane, 2023 ). Osteoporosis is characterized by declined bone density, sparse bone trabeculae, and degenerative bone microarchitecture, which often lead to bone fractures and defects ( Zhang H. et al, 2022 ). Bone substitutes or bone implants are often used for bone defects, but patients with osteoporosis face challenges in osseointegration due to reduced osteoblastic activity ( Chandran and John, 2019 ).…”
