Expert Consensus on Hyaluronic Acid Filler Facial Injection for Chinese Patients

Abstract: Background: Beauty standards vary by race and region, which must be accounted for in creating beauty. Chinese have unique features, including a depressed nose, flat midface, and small chin, and have different cosmetic concerns. We performed a consensus study on filler injections based on the Chinese standard of beauty due to a lack of such study. Methods: We organized the YVOIRE Consensus Group, including 5 plastic surgeons. We discussed common problema… Show more

“…Commonly, the nasolabial fold, medial maxilla, nose, tear trough, glabellar area, and forehead are sites requiring more caution in injection 10 . Asians tend to require fillers to correct structural low projection of the central part of the face 11 . This site is more vascular than the rest of the face, has inherent variations in vascular structures, and requires higher injection volume to correct the underlying skeletal features, hence resulting in an increased risk for AEs.…”

In a previous study using Korean and Thai cadavers, the percentage of detouring type (Type II; 31.6%) of angular artery, in which the angular artery run more lateral to the midline of the face and proceeded vertically to the cheek and tear trough area, was found to be more prevalent than the persistent type (Type I; 19.3%) in Asians.…”

“…HJ Moon and colleagues 9 described an expert consensus on HA injections for Chinese patients in which they demand injection at 4 sites with 0.25 mL administered at each site through a sharp needle from the point 5 mm superior to the mandibular border on the midline to augment the central part of the chin. We think this technique is useful for patients with mild chin retrusion, but it is not suitable for patients with moderate retrogenia, microgenia, prejowl sulcus, or labiomandibular groove who need more comprehensive treatments.…”

“…[5][6][7] Several techniques using cannulas or needles are used to inject HA when performing chin augmentation. [8][9][10][11] In this article, the authors describe their injection technique according to the anatomical morphology of the chin with HA for chin augmentation and explore the clinical and aesthetic effects of this novel approach.…”

“…Analisando o padrão de beleza chinês, Moon et al (2020), percebeu a falta de estudos envolvendo preenchimentos faciais nessa determinada etnia. Ressalta que é importante entender a região e o contexto étnicos nos quais o paciente está inserido.…”
