ResumenEl objetivo de este trabajo es definir los procedimientos de ensayo a seguir en uniones del tipo clavija para estructuras de madera, a fin de identificar su evolución resistiva en situaciones reales. Se desarrolla una metodología en consonancia con las nuevas directrices de la normativa europea, sobre probetas de tamaño real, reflejando los parámetros principales a tener en cuenta durante el ensayo y la evolución de gráficas tensión-deformación. Se contemplan factores como el aplastamiento de la madera, la flexión de la clavija y el efecto soga. Partiendo del análisis de prototipos, se fabrican herrajes específicos y varias series de probetas, para desarrollar ensayos sobre tres variantes. A saber, unión con bulón roscado, unión con pernos encolados y unión con arandela-tuerca, con el objetivo de analizar los comportamientos del nudo.Palabras clave : madera, ensayos, conexiones, unión, clavija, estructuras. Test Procedures for Dowel type Connections in Timber Structures AbstractThe aim of this paper is to define the test procedures to be followed in dowel-type joints of timber structures, in order to identify their resistant behavior in real situations. A new methodology is developed according to the new European regulations guidelines on real-size specimens, reflecting the main parameters to take into account during the tests and the evolution of the stress-strain relationships. Factors such as wood crushing, dowel bending and rope effect have been taken into account. From the analysis of prototypes, specific fittings and several series of tests on specimens have been prepared to develop the tests with three options. These are: joint with threaded bolt, joint with glued-in rod and joint with washers and nuts, all this with the objective of analyzing the behavior of the different types of connection.

The safety and serviceability of timber structures are frequently governed by the performance of joints. Bolted joints are a very commonly used form of joints and are effective from the viewpoint of the load-slip characteristics when subjected to a lateral force. The shear strength of a bolted joint is affected by various factors. Some of the factors affecting the shear strength of a bolted joint are classified into four categories in this paper: the material characteristics, geometrical factors, assembly conditions for the bolted joint, and factors that act during its service. This paper reviews the effects of these factors on the shear strength of a bolted joint. Numerous experimental studies were performed on the shear strength of a bolted joint. The effects of these factors on the shear strength varied according to the kind of shear strength and loading direction to the grain. In addition to the experimental investigations, analytical investigations to estimate the shear strength of a bolted joint are also discussed in this paper. Estimations of the yield strengths of bolted joints have been performed by numerous researchers; and in recent years, there has been an increase in studies to predict the load at failure.

The aim of the experimental study presented herein is the assessment and quantification of the behavior of individual dowels in multi-dowel connections loaded by a bending moment. For this purpose, doubleshear, steel-to-timber connections with nine steel dowels arranged in different patterns and with different dowel diameters were tested in 4-point bending. In order to achieve a ductile behavior with up to 7° relative rotation, the connections were partly reinforced with self-tapping screws. The reinforcement did not influence the global load-deformation behavior, neither for dowel diameters of 12 mm nor for 20 mm, as long as cracking was not decisive. The deformation of the individual dowels was studied by means of a non-contact deformation measurement system. Thus, the crushing deformation, i.e. the deformation at the steel plate, and the bending deformation of the dowels could be quantified. In case of 12 mm dowels, the bending deformation was larger than the crushing deformation, while it was smaller in case of 20 mm dowels. Moreover, dowels loaded parallel to the grain showed larger bending deformations than dowels loaded perpendicular to the grain. This indicates that the loading of the individual dowels in the connection differs, depending on their location.
