Free Viewpoint TV is a system to view natural videos and allow users to control the viewpoint interactively. The main idea is that the users can switch between multiple video streams to find viewpoints of their own choice. The purpose of this research is to provide fast switching between video streams so that users experience less delay while viewpoint switching. In this paper, we discussed different stream switching methods in detail, including their transmission issues. In addition, we discussed various scenarios for fast stream switching in order to make services more interactive by minimizing delays. The quality of service is another factor which can be improved by assigning priorities to the packets. In addition, we discussed simultaneous stream transmission methods which are based on predictions and reduced quality streams for fast switching. Finally, we propose a prediction algorithm (Linear Regression) and system model for fast viewpoint switching and evaluate simultaneous stream transmission methods for free Viewpoint TV. The results indicate that the proposed system model improves the viewpoint switching and perform fast switching.

We deal with the processing of multiview video acquired by the use of practical thus relatively simple acquisition systems that have a limited number of cameras located around a scene on independent tripods. The real-camera locations are nearly arbitrary as it would be required in the real-world FreeViewpoint Television systems. The appropriate test video sequences are also reported. We describe a family of original extensions and adaptations of the multiview video processing algorithms adapted to arbitrary camera positions around a scene. The techniques constitute the video processing chain for FreeViewpoint Television as they are aimed at estimating the parameters of such a multi-camera system, video correction, depth estimation and virtual view synthesis. Moreover, we demonstrate the need for new compression technology capable of efficient compression of sparse convergent views. The experimental results for processing the proposed test sequences are reported.

The paper presents a novel approach to occlusion handling problem in depth estimation using three views. A solution based on modification of similarity cost function is proposed. During the depth estimation via optimization algorithms like Graph Cut similarity metric is constantly updated so that only non-occluded fragments in side views are considered. At each iteration of the algorithm non-occluded fragments are detected based on side view virtual depth maps synthesized from the best currently estimated depth map of the center view. Then similarity metric is updated for correspondence search only in non-occluded regions of the side views. The experimental results, conducted on well-known 3D video test sequences, have proved that the depth maps estimated with the proposed approach provide about 1.25 dB virtual view quality improvement in comparison to the virtual view synthesized based on depth maps generated by the stateof-the-art MPEG Depth Estimation Reference Software.
